Petroleum History Institute’s 2024 Symposium – May 20 – 22, 2004

Clint Tippett and I Co-hosted the PHI 2024 Symposium in Canmore on May 20-22. The PHI is based in Titusville, PA. and holds symposiums in a city or town in North America every year and provides an Oil History journal of the event each year.

Clint is the President of the Petroleum History Society based in in Calgary and an ex-Shell geologist. Clint handled obtaining speakers and arranging time slots, creating the field trip guide and the overall symposium program and guide. He also handled the Awards citations.

Rick handled the Monday afternoon Registration and evening Reception which was held at the Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre. Rick also handled getting the hotel accommodation lined up for the attendees at Chateau Canmore and arranged for the conference room with breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks for the Talks day and the Awards Banquet Dinner, and the bus for the field trip.

Together we discussed who should receive awards to be given out at the Banquet. Jim Gray, Ian MacGregor and Mike Rose were each awarded the prestigious Colonel Edwin L. Drake Legendary Oilman Award. David Finch received the Samuel T. Pees Keeper of the Flame award and Annette Milbradt received the new William R. Brice Education award. Citations for these and other awards are available in the 2024 Oil History Journal.

The main destinations for the field trip were the Turner Valley Gas Plant (TVGP) and the Canadian Museum of Making (CMM) near Cochrane. We were grateful for the help from the Turner Valley Oilfield Society Board. The weather was quite cool at the TVGP. The guides provided very detailed information about the TVGP and the CEM. The lunch at CMM was fantastic.

A number of CRESRC current and past staff were among the 47 attendees.

The PHI Board members provided critical information at points throughout the preceding 2 years. Marilyn Black, PHI Secretary, requires special mention for helping us with every aspect of the event. Unfortunately, she was not able to attend the actual event.

The symposium was appreciated by all and also made a substantial profit!

Clint and Rick received PHI’s 2025 Distinguished Service award at the 2025 symposium in Midland, Texas for their work on the 2024 symposium.
