Rick Green, President/Owner, Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre
Education: Rick Green has a B. Sc. in Physics – Honors (1971) and a M. Sc. in Physics (1978), both from the University of Victoria (Victoria, B.C.).
Experience:
Rick is a semi-retired geophysicist who worked with Talisman Energy Inc. in Calgary (1985 – 2009), mostly drilling prolific gas wells in the Monkman area of NE B. C. Prior to that, he worked for Amoco Canada Petroleum Company Limited (1978 – 1985) in Calgary, Denver, New Orleans and Houston. He started his work as a geophysicist with the Earth Physics Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in Mould Bay, NWT and Resolute, NWT (1972 – 1976). After retirement from Talisman, he worked on contract for Petromanas Energy Inc. on seismic data from Albania (July 2010 – July 2011).
He was a volunteer with the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre since 1998 in various positions and as President from May 2005 to June 2014 and as Past President until June 2018. The highlight of his time at the Museum was the unveiling of the Operation Bow Athabasca exhibit in May 2012.
He was involved with biathlon as a volunteer official (1990 – 2015), including being a Board member of Biathlon Alberta and the Alberta Biathlon Club for a number of years. As part of his Board duties, he was the Safety Chairman for a number of years and continued to be concerned about safety and fairness on the range for the biathletes. He took many biathlon courses and became an International Referee in 2003. He officiated at many biathlon events including Alberta Cups, North American Cups, Alberta Winter Games (Lethbridge, Red Deer, Canmore), Arctic Winter Games (Yellowknife, Ft McMurray), Canadian Championships (Canmore, Edmonton, Charlo, Quebec, Whistler), Canada Winter Games (Whitehorse), IBU Cups (Canmore), Junior Youth World Championships (Canmore) and World Cups (Canmore, Whistler), mostly as Chief of Range or International Referee. He was given a number of Alberta Official of the Year awards (1996, 2007), the Calgary Booster Club Biathlon Honored Leader award (2004) and the Biathlon Canada June Hooper award (2004). As a highlight of his volunteering, he was the Deputy Chief of Range at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
In addition, Rick was the President of the Coronation Place Condominium Association in Calgary for 3 years from 2002 to 2005. He was on the Board of Canmore Place where CRESRC is located from 2016 to 2022.
In November 2013, he became a Fellow of Geoscientists Canada (FGC). He also received a Special Commendation Award from the CSEG in March 2014. In 2019, he received the Petroleum History Society Preservation Award. In 2020, he was highlighted in APEGA’s “A Century Well Built: – 100 years of engineering and geoscience stories from across Alberta” anniversary website and book for year 2011. Recently he was given the CSEG 2021 Honorary Member award.
Rick is currently a member of the Board of Titusville, Pennsylvania-based Petroleum History Institute (PHI). PHI runs a symposium at a city in North America each year with a day of lectures followed by a day-long field trip. Clint Tippett and Rick are organizing the 2024 Symposium in the Calgary/Canmore area of Alberta.
He is particularly interested in seeing the geology of the mountains in the vicinity of the Bow Valley presented in an engaging way to students and the general public.
