The Science Odyssey week is a time that the Federal Government asks groups across Canada to have events and they will advertise them on their website. The Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre (Museum), Earth Science of Society (ESFS), the Biosphere Institute and the Canadian Rockies Earth Science Centre (CRESRC) was involved on two Saturdays last year. When it was found out that the Lawrence Grassi Middle School was not going to the ESFS event at the Big4 Building in Calgary this year, Rick thought it might be a great idea to have something similar in Canmore. After discussions with Sami Wackerly at the Canmore Museum and Annette Milbradt with EFSF and Julie Grondin at the LGMS, it was decided to go ahead. After many emails and meetings with ESFS and the Biosphere Institute and working with the local schools, the day arrived. Approximately 220 grade 7 students from the local schools visited 4 venues (Civic Centre Atrium, CRESRC, Biosphere Institute and the Museum) over a 2 hour period (sessions 9:00am – 11:00am, 11:00am – 1:00pm; 1:00pm – 3:00pm) with a maximum of 100 students per session split up into groups of 25 or less.

My thanks to Sami for pulling the event together, Annette for getting the ESFS volunteers out from Calgary and Melanie Watt from the Biosphere Institute for her help organizing the event. Our thanks to the companies and societies (ESFS (3), CRESRC, Biosphere Institute, Lafarge, Interpretive Guides Association, Canmore Stargazers, Parks Canada and Canmore Caves) for providing the personnel and materials for the tables/booths in order to make this event a great success. I also would like to thank Panago for providing the pizza for lunch. We intend to do this again next year!
